Class Description

Foil 1
These lessons teach the new student the basics of fencing. The class covers saluting, the foil grip, fencing rules and regulations, advancing, retreating, lunging, a four parry (blocking) system and simple attacks. These fundamentals serve as the foundation of good balance and safe fencing. Also, multiple exercises are shown to improve fencing techniques at home. These lessons introduce the foil, the weapon most often taught first among the three competitive choices of foil, epee, and sabre. No bouting is done in Foil I, so no fencing gear is needed. A weapon will be provided for work in the mirror.

Musketeer Class
Coach Lee teaches children 14 and under in a different format than the  traditional “foil 1” and “foil 2” system. Though ultimately the young  athletes will need to master very small motor movements (e.g. finger  motions) to complete their fencing education, this class concentrates on building a solid foundation of motor memory in the major muscle groups with a fun, dynamic curriculum. Strategy and tactics with footwork is emphasized over bladework, though each class will include work with weapons.

Foil 2
Foil II is designed to prepare the beginner for bouting, but will often go beyond that scope. These classes teach the more difficult fencing techniques such as the parry- riposte, ballestra, fleche, and parry combinations. Non-electrical fencing gear will be required in this class, as the participating fencers will be bouting.  Once again, the class covers only foil, though most techniques are useful in the other weapons. Level 2 also give competitive bouting instruction and instruction on the armory of the blade and other electrical scoring gear.
It is recommended that electrical gear be purchased for this class, though it is not required. Almost all competitions require electrical gear, and the electrical bouting requires it as well. This includes a Lame, body chord, and electrical swords, along with the gear required for the class. (See the gear section for reference.)

Open Bouting
12 - 1pm Kids/Novice bouting (standard and electric)
2pm - 4pm Electric bouting (competitive fencing for older teens and adults)
The Coeur du Lion fencers practice bouting with hand judges and critique from Coaches Lee and Willey. There is no extra charge for bouting, but each fencer is expected to act as a hand judge when not fencing.
From 2:00 to 4:00 fencers may participate in electrically scored open bouting, again with critique from the coaches along with other fencers. Electrical gear may be rented from the club. Use of the electrical scoring boxes and strips are free, as long as you are taking lessons at Coeur du Lion.
